Later in the day we had our 5th Grade Colonial Thanksgiving Meal! This was a fun time where students brought in a prepared "Colonial" meal from their assigned colony for our Social Studies unit. Thanks to all the parents and students that participated!
Students helped their 1st grade buddies edit thanksgiving letters! This group of 5th graders has done such a good job in modeling our General Learner Outcomes for the younger students, as well as practice and show the writing/editing process! We learned and discussed Squanto's Garden techniques. This is where the Native Americans including Squanto used fish as a fertilizer to help plants grow, they showed this to the colonists in Plymouth. We are going to apply this strategy as a connection to our colonial America unit, but also to practice the Scientific Method and understanding how variables influence results, in this case plant growth! Thus, we will be using the scissors to get a little messy and cut up fish, then do some planting! Students were given 4 pieces of paper and a small piece of tape. They had to practice using the Engineer by Design Process to come up with a bridge that can hold weight. We compared group strategies and methods for builiding a 4 page bridge! Students were encouraged to utilize the "Make it Better" step, where they could refine and modify their models of bridges, to see what variables affect the strength and support of a bridge! |
