One of our standards for science is "Conduct an investigation to determine whether the mixing of two or more substances results in new substances. " Thus we had a lab where we explored what happens to the state of matter liquid when we mix it with another substance. Matter is our first science concept beyond the Scientific Method, students have been excited and focused with this content!

Our 5th Grade Elective Clubs started this past Friday! Each Friday we end the week with students voted and prefered club! Mr. Copple's Club is the Fitness Club. (Few pictures below!) Students go to the 5th Grade or Resource teacher for their club every Friday. This is a great chance to try new things, find new topics to explore, and meet students from other classes. Ask your child what club they are in! Whose the teacher? What are are they getting opportunities to do?

The book Encounter is a native boy's perspective of the European Explorers first reaching the New World of America. Pretty crazy how our perspectives of Columbus changed after reading just one story! We received confirmation that we need to make checks for meals payable to: State of Hawaii - Department of Education. On the bottom, where there's a line with For ______________________, write DKIES and student's or staff's name. The Department has been accepting checks payable to Hale Kula or Daniels K. Inouye Elementary, but we've been asked to inform our school community about the change. Thanks, Jan We've started to explore the Engineering by Design Plan (EDP). This is another way for us to explore science topics and experiments alongside the traditional Scientific Method!
